Grand Opening of The Iron Yard Las Vegas

Tonight, The Iron Yard held a grand opening for their new Las Vegas campus. After a soft opening in June, they started by holding Front End Engineering and Data Science courses (taught by two very qualified instructors, both of whom happen to be friends of mine — Chase Adams and Jeff Newburn).

In what I think is a new milestone for the #VegasTech community, Carolyn Goodman, the mayor of the City of Las Vegas, attended the grand opening, participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony, and delivered an official proclamation declaring today, August 19th, as The Iron Yard day.

For our tech community to get that kind of positive attention from a politician tells me we’re doing something right. Four years ago, it would have been inconceivable to think a mayor would attend anything we were doing — we were just too small at that point. But through a huge collective effort (you know who you are — heck, if you’re reading this, you’re probably part of that effort) we have been able to grow a pretty vibrant community.

Full disclosure: I’m on the Board of Advisors for the Las Vegas branch of the Iron Yard. Regardless, I think it’s pretty cool the mayor came out to support the #VegasTech community.

A Bunch of Great Las Vegas Tech Startup Events

We try not to make this an event blog since there are so many events to cover. However, we try to cover new ones that get started that we find interesting and also big ones that hit town like CES. One of the advantages of being a startup in Las Vegas is that we have conventions and conferences coming here all the time.

Here’s a recent example I got in my inbox about a Pitch Competition that’s coming to Vegas in October:

We are running a Pitch Competition for Event Technology Startups during IMEX America 2015 in Las Vegas (13-15 Oct.) There is no fee to join this competition and the top 5 shortlisted companies will be invited to pitch their product live to an audience of event professionals. Full info here: http://www.imexamerica.com/imexpitch

I would appreciate it if you could share this with the local startups that work in this area. Entries are open until Aug 31st.

The InNEVation Center is holding a great event on Wednesday Aug 19th called StartUp Day Across America Celebration. They’re having free open coworking, coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts in the morning and then lunch from Metro Pizza, prizes, snacks and fun activities throughout the day. Sounds like the perfect startup event to me. Be sure to RSVP if you plan to attend.

I could go on and on about other events like LaunchUp happening tonight or the regular community dinners hosted by Work In Progress each Wednesday. VegasTech.com has done a pretty good job aggregating other events. I hope to see you at InNEVation Center. I’ll be bringing my laptop and hopefully getting some work done amidst all the festivities and friends.
