Vegas Publisher and Event Company Tech Cocktail Raises $2.5 Million

Tech Cocktail just announced a $2.5 million investment from Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project. Congrats to Tech Cocktail on raising a great round of funding.

Those in the Vegas Tech startup community are likely familiar with Tech Cocktail. I’d say they’re best known in Las Vegas for their monthly Tech Week events that they hold on the second week of every month. When I talk to entrepreneurs and investors outside of Las Vegas, I’ve started suggesting they come visit what’s happening with startup companies in Las Vegas during Tech Week.

Another interesting part of the Tech Cocktail funding announcement is this little tidbit, “We’ll soon be announcing an exciting new national platform for startups and their regions around the country.” We’ll have to see what kind of platform they’ve created. I guess they didn’t read the latest tech buzz about building a platform is a lazy pivot. Or maybe it’s a logical one given their audience. It will be fun to see how it plays out.

It’s been great to have Tech Cocktail as part of the Vegas Tech community. They’ve embraced the community with open arms and done a lot to contribute to it. I look forward to many more great Tech Cocktail events in the future.

TechCocktail Opens Office in Las Vegas

Late last week the news came out the Tech Cocktail was opening an office in Las Vegas. Here’s a section of why Tech Cocktail chose Las Vegas:

[Las Vegas] has some of the highest unemployment in the country and was one of the hardest hit by the housing market collapse. For those who might think this step is crazy, I have two words for you: Tony Hsieh and his Downtown Project. Ok, that’s six words, but you get the idea.

Something exciting is happening in the Las Vegas tech scene. So we will work with Tony Hsieh and his team to apply the knowledge we’ve acquired from supporting startup ecosystems in Chicago, DC, and the 20+ other tech communities we’ve worked with over the years and see where it can go. We will also take an active role in sharing our media and editorial expertise. More to come on that soon.

I want our team to be a part of this exciting undertaking and to contribute Tech Cocktail’s energy and enthusiasm. We believe we can positively affect the creation of a city in downtown Las Vegas, which is like no other opportunity we’ve ever been presented – like a LEGO town or real life Sim City in the works. This is important not just to Nevada, but to the entire US economy, as there are many cities looking for models of how to evolve and grow their economies.

I got a chance to meet a number of the Tech Cocktail people at the Vegas Jelly last week and then at the Downtown Speaker Series. They’re going to be a great and welcome addition to the Vegas Tech community.

Vegas Tech – Home to Tech Bloggers
What I find even more interesting to note is how many tech bloggers are found in Las Vegas. Paul Carr regularly writes for PandoDaily and PandoDaily Founder Sarah Lacy’s husband works in Las Vegas which means she’s in Las Vegas regularly as well. Gigaom has a writer in Las Vegas as well.

Gary Vaynerchuk‘s empire just had Matt Sitomer move to Las Vegas. DigitalRoyalty is here. Neither of those are tech media per se, but they do get a lot of social media buzz.

I’m sure there others that I’m missing, but I find the trend interesting that so many tech media companies would have a presence in Las Vegas. Add in the number of times that tech media companies come to Las Vegas for conferences and there’s a tremendous opportunity for Las Vegas tech companies to be well covered in tech media.
